The brief was to create a new crafted interior to refresh the environment and offer for this established, artisanal bakery.

Gail’s Bakery was set up by Gail Mejia in 2005, specialising in hand baked sourdough made with natural ingredients, the team use traditional baking methods for neighbourhoods in and around London. Our team were appointed to create a new interior treatment for this growing, virtuoso bakery. The interior coincided with a relaunch of the company’s corporate identity. The interior solution focuses on raw, natural materials with a colour palette to reflect the natural ingredients of the daily baking, the serving and dining spaces were carved to encourage the maximum natural light and create and uplifting environment for the visitor.

Project completed in Portobello and the concept was rolled out to various sites across London.

This three storey, 1960s concrete framed building had suffered from little maintenance and upkeep in recent years. This scheme was to refurbish the two upper floors and their associated common parts to bring the first and second floors into line with contemporary office environments.

As part of the overall refurbishment strategy the windows have been replaced on both upper floors. New painted W20 steel windows have been installed with horizontal centre pivot casements.

This refurbishment has brought the sadly neglected Sussex House back into use as an aspirational city centre business location, a much sought after asset which will plug a gap in the commercial property landscape in Chichester.

Gross internal area is 6,610 square feet, completed in March 2018.

Sussex House received a Highly Commended certificate in the 2018 Sussex Heritage Trust Awards.

JWA embraced the design challenge to create a series of theatrical spaces. The team was appointed to monitor the base build and then undertake all design and management work for the £3M internal fit which was completed 2014.

This project has enabled JWA to push boundaries and spend time exploring the future workspace. Consequently this scheme offers dynamic yet functional serviced office space to meet the demands of a savvy generation of eager entrepreneurs.

After having been leased to one multimedia tenant for two years, JWA is currently designing a refresh scheme for The Stanley Building to be marketed in its original offer of a considered, simple office space for small business rental, virtual offices and meeting rooms.

The period Georgian building is accessed from Stratford Place, a cul-de-sac directly opposite Bond Street tube. It links through to a more modern office building constructed in the 1970s which fronts on to Marylebone Lane. Clients can choose what style of working and what address best suits their business.

JWA had the challenge of combining the two styles and creating design-led office space. As well as a range of office sizes, styles and meeting spaces, this building also features co-working spaces a membership based drop-in work and lounge areas.

Planning permission has been granted for two new build houses on a green field, ‘edge of settlement’ site in Ardingly.  The scheme for Drake Developments, a London based developer, is to create two five bedroom semi-detached homes arranged over ground and first floors with basements to accommodate a gym, games/media room and plant room and utility rooms.  The proposed new dwellings respect the residential character of the area and set a new standard for properties within the immediate location.

The new homes are located on the boundary of the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, as such the scheme will retain the woodland screening at the rear of the site and new landscaping will be provided to enhance the setting for each house as well as provide appropriate habitats for local wildlife.

This scheme involved the conversion of two warehouses into three self-contained office units. One was a robust Edwardian red brick industrial building with stone dressings. The second was a 1980s double height brick shed with crude glazing and garage doors to the front. The challenge was to unite these two buildings to form a coherent whole.

Bespoke light fittings were designed and installed throughout both buildings to give the tenant both general and focused lighting. Service areas were created with the insertion of elegantly designed timber pods into the original shell. A courtyard of silver birch trees has been formed at the rear in order to maximise available daylight and allow cross ventilation.

This speculative development was sold prior to completion to an owner-occupier in the music industry.

The plan was totally rearranged and the passenger lift relocated to bring the previously unused basement into use and providing fully serviced offices, meeting rooms and break-out spaces. As an homage to Verner Panton, internal spaces were designed to reference ‘60’s Op Art, using hot primary colours, white resin flooring and felt upholstery.

A new concept design was created to take the Giraffe brand – already well established in nine medium sized high street locations across London – up to a larger unit size and for roll out across the UK.

The first unit in the new concept was in the Thames riverside retail development of the Royal Festival Hall. Giraffe took a 5,000 sq ft new restaurant shell in the extended river walkway level. Trading results outstripped all budget projections and the roll out rapidly proceeded to new sites across London and out to Oxford, Cambridge and Exeter amongst others.

By 2012 JWA had completed and handed over a total of seventeen new sites for Giraffe, and had refurbished twelve of the older sites to bring them into line with the new concept.
