The new James Wells Architects website goes live today. It is only two months since the new practice was established, so work featured on the site includes ongoing projects that were started under the previous practice title WMA.

The content and design for the new website has been led by Adam John. It has been a group effort with all practice members contributing to specific content on individual projects, visuals or copywriting.

The structure of the website has been created by Dookie who has taken a visual cue from the practice’s new identity. Using the core colours of red, grey and black the mission was to create a site that is easy to navigate whilst containing more in-depth information on the projects and practice. James has written a new section on ‘process’ which is intended to help clients who are new to the world of architecture, offering an insight into the steps required to create a new building.

Under the guidance of new Marketing guru, Jo Scott, the practice is also now more active on Facebook and Twitter.

After 18 years of running a partnership, Wells Mackereth, the partners James and Sally have amicably agreed to go their separate ways. They have individually set up two new separate companies.

James has restructured the original practice as James Wells Architects. His team is based in Farringdon and is continuing with the existing portfolio of clients. Joanna Scott has joined the practice in a new role of Marketing Director. Jo has over 20 years experience specialising in communications and media relations for the creative industries. Jo’s mission is to bring a clearer, more strategic approach to communications and new business. Impressed with the team’s attention to detail, quality of design and level of competence, Jo’s role is to help grow the practice and increase the size of projects as well as extending the client base.

The original practice, Wells Mackereth Architects, was founded by James in 1995, and focused on the design of private houses, retail, bar and restaurant projects, commercial and residential developments and arts projects. The practice grew to 12 staff and over its lifespan James and his team completed more than 180 built projects typically in a range of contract values from £ 400K to £1.5M, extending up to £ 6M.

Today the JWA design team for The Stanley Building attended the Topping Out Ceremony for The Stanley Building. Located in the development at King’s Cross, this project is a 30,000 sq. ft. combined office and retail fit-out for The Office Group Limited.

The term Topping Out refers to the overall completion of a building’s structure. A topping out ceremony is normally held to commemorate this significant moment in the creation of a new building. This event was attended by the Developer, Argent, and JWA’s client and Stanley Building’s lessee, The Office Group. During the ceremony a Yew tree was craned into position on the top of the building. A sprig of a Yew has been used by builders for centuries as a tradition to ward off evil spirits.

Joanna Black architect at JWA comments, ‘Whilst The Stanley Building is the smallest office building at the King’s Cross site, it is one of the most significant since it has been created with and for the client.’ This ceremony was an exciting time for the design team; standing atop the threshold building in the King’s Cross development on a clear Winter day the team had fabulous views of London’s cityscape.

The development at King’s Cross is a joint venture between developers Argent, London & Continental Railways and DHL. By 2016 most of the 67 acres will be developed making the region one of London’s most exciting regeneration projects. It will house five new office buildings, new homes, student housing and the refurbishment of the Great Northern Hotel as well as the University of the Arts London, Granary Square, King’s Bridge and King’s Boulevard, the latter of which are open now.
